Counselling at MPF
Based in High Wycombe, MPF Counselling offers a professional and confidential counselling service to adults in the surrounding area. Many of our clients come from High Wycombe, Marlow or Maidenhead, however we are open to clients from any geographical area.
Whilst GPs may recommend some clients to contact us, anyone over 18 years of age is free to contact us independently.
We are a non-profit organisation and a registered charity. (Charity No 1095554) We were set up in 1977.
Our Counsellors
Our counsellors are professionally trained and closely supervised. They have either completed their training (a minimum of two years) or are at a stage in their training where they are assessed as competent to counsel. The majority have many years’ counselling experience.
Our counsellors use a psychodynamic model in counselling. Psychodynamic counselling is about enabling a person to make changes in his/her life which he/she feels would be of benefit. This often involves a clearer understanding of what led to him/her having a particular problem in the first place. A painful situation in the present may have its roots in the past, but the individual may not be aware of the connection. Psychodynamic counselling assists a person to uncover these hidden links, which in turn allows the individual greater freedom of thought and action.
Counselling sessions are usually once a week for 50 minutes, with the same counsellor. The period of counselling is tailored to individual needs. For many clients the counselling will continue for many months – basically for as long as the client and counsellor feel it is helpful.
For some clients, it is agreed with the counsellor at the start that the counselling will be for a fixed number of sessions and will focus on a particular issue. This is called Time Limited Counselling and is for twelve weeks.
Our Professional Standards
Accreditation

In our work we strictly adhere to the requirements for ethical and professional conduct set by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and we are a BACP accredited service. You can visit their website on www.bacp.co.uk
We are supported and directed by a Board of Trustees and we have an Advisory panel, including a GP and a psychiatrist, who we can call upon if required.
Confidentiality
Personal information disclosed to a counsellor is strictly confidential to the professional counselling side of the agency. Further details of our confidentiality guidelines can be obtained from our Centre.
Equal Opportunities
Our services are available to any adult i.e. anyone 18 years and over, seeking help. We do not discriminate on grounds of belief, culture, class, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation. We have wheel chair access to our counselling rooms.
Client Contributions for Counselling
As a non-profit making charity, with finite resources, we need to work in a way that allows us to fulfil our long-term commitments to all of our clients.
We ask our clients to make a financial contribution towards the cost of their counselling, according to their means. We would appreciate a contribution of £40 weekly, however we understand that not all of our clients can genuinely afford this amount.
We do expect you to keep your appointments. If you cancel or miss an appointment you are still expected to make your weekly financial contribution, as this time is reserved for you and therefore cannot be offered to anyone else.
